Combatting Deforestation Through Sustainable Cocoa Practices in Brazil

Grantee: Instituto Arapyaú

Subgrantee: Violet, Tabôa, CIAPRA Baixo Sul, Polímata, Solidaridad

Geographic Focus Brazil, Amazon Basin

Duration: June 2025 – May 2028

About the Project

Brazil is the fifth largest cocoa producer in the world, with over 93,000 farmers in the value chain, most of whom are smallholders. More than 80% of cocoa plantations are managed under agroforestry systems, where farmers help preserve native vegetation while sustaining their livelihoods.

Despite the significance of cocoa, there is still a significant opportunity in cocoa production to unleash the national potential. 85% of cocoa farmers lack access to credit for production and 75% have never received technical assistance. This is largely due to insufficient documentation and a lack of support to obtain it.

JFF is supporting Instituto Arapyaú through its Kawá Fund, a financial mechanism designed to support the provision of integrated financial and technical assistance to smallholder farmers while promoting sustainable ‘cabruca’ agroforestry practices (a sustainable, traditional agroforestry system). This will reduce the risk of deforestation and protect native forests in Brazil’s cocoa-growing regions of Pará and Bahia.

About Instituto Arapyaú: Instituto Arapyaú is a Brazilian philanthropic organisation that aims to promote a nature agenda in Brazil from an integrated perspective that connects people, economy, and climate. To do this, it fosters collaboration to promote structural initiatives which deliver scalable and systemic solutions for the development of Brazil.

Violet approaches this by combining financial innovation, proprietary technology and deep local expertise to enable investments across regenerative agriculture, conservation and the bioeconomy.

About Tabôa: Tabôa is a non-profit organisation focused on strengthening communities through knowledge-sharing, access to financial resources and co-operation. To do this, it fosters community-based initiatives and socio-economic ventures which value culture, diversity and local values.

About CIAPRA Baixo Sul: CIAPRA Baixo Sul is a consortium of municipalities working together to promote sustainable development in the Baixo Sul region of Bahia.

About Polímata: Polímata is a company working to promote sustainable development in multiple production systems, e.g., cocoa and coffee, among others.
