Athletes

The all-consuming demands of being an elite athlete often come at the expense of other life priorities like education and gaining professional experience

When an athlete’s career ends – usually abruptly and out of their control – they face a range of challenges that they are mostly unprepared for. This can make the transition to life after sports extremely difficult.

“Around half of athletes in the UK do not feel in control of their lives up to two years after finishing their careers”

“In the UK up to 60% of athletes experienced a mental health issue after retirement”

Yet through their dedication and accomplishments, elite athletes have developed valuable skills and experience that can be of use to them beyond just in their sport.  With the right support, athletes can navigate to the next stage smoothly and effectively, benefiting them and society as a whole.

We will focus on enhancing the provision of support available to athletes as they make this transition and identify opportunities for lasting improvement.  We will prioritise non-professional sports – for example Olympic and Paralympic sports – where athletes are less likely to have a salary, with a particular focus on disadvantaged athletes.   We will start our work in the UK but look to increase our scope to other countries as we develop.

Enhancing Existing Provision

Through our partners, we aim to ensure athletes have access to a wide range of post-sporting career support and opportunities. This will aim to meet the needs of athletes, ranging from addressing the psychological challenges of transition through to education and career advice. We will have an inclusive and athlete-centred approach paying particular attention to ensuring the support is targeted and available to disadvantaged or minority athlete groups.

Lasting Improvement

To improve the overall effectiveness of the support available, we will encourage collaboration and support independent monitoring, learning and evaluation.  We will also invest in research identifying best practices and will explore new ideas and approaches to enhance athlete transition support.

Protecting Our Rainforests

The world’s tropical rainforests support the lives of millions of people, host some of the world’s greatest biodiversity and play an essential role in tackling climate change. Yet an area of forest the size of Greece is still being lost each year. We will support projects that protect the rainforest and that prevent further destruction.
