Rainforests

Tropical rainforests are invaluable for humanity, the climate, and the natural world

Tropical rainforests are invaluable for humanity, the climate, and the natural world – yet they face an urgent threat of destruction.

They support the livelihoods of millions of people, host 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity and are responsible for 25-30% of the world’s oxygen turnover.  Yet we are losing an area of forest the size of Greece each year, and deforestation is one of the largest sources of global greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2023, the tropics lost 3.7 million hectares of primary forest. This is equivalent to losing 10 soccer fields per minute.

We plan on focusing our grant making on supporting projects that preserve what’s still remaining and contributing to efforts to prevent further destruction.

While maintaining a global focus, we will have a deeper focus in Africa and Latin America.

Protection

We will prioritise long-term, financially, and socially viable rainforest conservation projects – for example, those with support from forest communities, national governments, and strong alternative revenue sources. Quality will take precedence over sheer scale. We particularly acknowledge the crucial role Indigenous and local communities play in rainforest protection, and this will be reflected in our partnerships and strategies.

Prevention

The Foundation will also concentrate efforts on addressing the evolving drivers of deforestation and advancing promising solutions to prevent further destruction. Drawing from the experiences of others, we aim to better understand and contribute to the underlying issues and opportunities affecting rainforest deforestation. Our funding will prioritise evidence-based approaches and prioritise collaboration and partnerships to enable us to achieve lasting impact.

Supporting After-Sport Transitions

Athletes dedicate their lives to their sport, and in doing so inspire millions. Yet the vast majority face significant challenges when they exit from sport. We will enhance the support available to athletes during this transition and develop new ideas that can lead to lasting change.
