Incentivising Soy Farmers to Stop Deforestation and Achieve Full Traceability in the Brazilian Amazon

Grantee: Fundepag

Subgrantee: AgriTIERRA, Alauda Consulting, Imaflora

Geographic Focus Brazil, Amazon Basin

Duration: June 2025 – December 2026

About the Project

Soy is a major driver of deforestation and land conversion in Brazil. Multi-lateral commitments such as the Amazon Soy Moratorium aim to prevent the trade of soy from deforested areas, but this requires monitoring farm areas and tracing products back to farms. Fully transparent and traceable Brazilian soy remains complex, particularly in relation to indirect suppliers. Meanwhile, there is still a lack of incentives for environmental regularisation, reforestation and maintenance of ecosystem services.

With the support of JFF funding, this project aims to enhance environmental compliance and best practices in soy production in the Brazilian Amazon through the use of a Protocol for Sustainable Regenerative Agriculture, based on the principles of Ecological Economics, as a technical-operational subsidy for the transition from a conventional and highly entropic model of agriculture to a model of regenerative and sustainable agriculture. The initiative will work with community interest groups in the soy sector to pilot a scalable model for incentivising forest retention, deliver increased traceability along value chains, build capacity for sustainable practices, and connect to buyers to support the transition to soy sustainable farming.
