About the Project

About the Synchronicity Earth (SE) Congo Basin Programme (CBP)

Launched in 2017, the SE CBP brings together contributions from 10 funders and SE itself to pool resources around a common strategy and share learnings. The programme provides funding and support to communities and Indigenous Peoples to resist destructive developments that threaten forests and rivers, to defend their territories, and protect and revive ecosystems through regenerative approaches to development. SE’s approach is to magnify impact by developing strategic partnerships with locally led organisations and progressive funders working at the intersection of these issues.

The Congo Basin contains the second largest unbroken tract of rainforest on Earth, yet some of the most impactful conservation organisations working in the region struggle to access the funding and support they need. Through years of experience working with individuals and locally led organisations in the region, SE have found that place-based approaches informed and led by the communities who live on the land are the most effective, long-term response to protect biodiversity, promote land rights, and support communities to develop sustainably. SE’s Congo Basin Pooled Fund offers donors the opportunity to join forces to scale up vital support to local people and organisations dedicated to protecting this vast and uniquely important, but highly threatened landscape.

About Synchronicity Earth: Synchronicity Earth is a UK-registered charity dedicated to increasing funding and effective support for organisations and communities protecting nature in some of Earth’s most biologically diverse yet threatened regions. Since 2009, SE has provided over GBP 21 million in grant funding to more than 200 organisations, building long-term relationships founded on trust and flexibility to help deliver the support they need.

In its support to protect and restore tropical forest ecosystems, SE recognises that conservation depends on the people that live in and depend on the forest. Through its partners SE works in areas where there is an urgent need for conservation action, developing programmes which make a difference to species, habitats and local people.
