Paris 2024 – Personal Development

Grantee: Reboot, Human First Athlete Transitions, The True Athlete Project

Geographic Focus: UK

Duration: July 2024 – December 2025

About the Project

First Steps: The First Steps Programme is a 6-week series of online small group workshops delivered in partnership by three dedicated and experienced athlete well-being organisations – Human First, Reboot, and the True Athlete Project (TAP). First Steps is designed to provide a supportive and holistic approach to transition, addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of this change. The programme represents a supportive space to explore the ‘first steps’ of the journey. Based on each individual experience of First Steps, participants will receive guidance on potential future pathways for continued personal and professional development.

The Human First Retreat (Human First Athlete Transition): The Human First Retreat is a transformative programme designed to support athletes in the deeper process of transitioning beyond their sports careers. This residential experience helps athletes discover and harness the potential of their true nature that lies beneath their athletic identity. Through a combination of group workshops, discussions, mindfulness, movement, and breath work, the retreat guides athletes beyond the relentless pursuit of success towards a balanced and harmonious state of greater fulfilment. The retreat aims to grow self-compassion, self-love, and inner validation, to provide strength in facing fears and vulnerabilities, and to allow for personal growth for a stable, meaningful life beyond sport.

Reboot_: Reboot_ is a 12-month journey designed to guide athletes through the challenges of transitioning out of sport. At the core of the program is the Reboot_ Forum – a close-knit group of eight participants who engage in meaningful discussions, share experiences, and provide mutual support. The forum offers a safe and trusted space to explore the emotional and practical aspects of transition, alongside others who truly understand the journey. Reboot_ is for athletes at any stage of retirement who are ready to embrace the emotional and practical challenges of transitioning from a professional sports career.

Global Mentoring Programme (The True Athlete Project): The True Athlete Project’s (TAP) athlete mentoring program matches aspiring young athletes with world-class current or former champions in a nurturing, year-long, one-to-one relationship. The overall aim of the programme is to provide these young athletes with a positive role model who has been through many of the same highs and lows that they can relate to, as well as some key strategies and tools to help them be more resilient and find greater meaning in their sporting endeavours. Alongside the 1-1 mentoring sessions, mentors join a community of practice together with their fellow mentors, going through extensive training and development in mentoring and communications skills, as well as how to guide their mentee through the unique, holistic curriculum. Each cohort comprises 30-35 pairs, from 30+ sports and 10-15 nationalities.

About Human First Athlete Transition

Human First provide expert support to explore the human psychology of transitioning from life as an athlete. They place specific focus upon providing groups of transitioning athletes with a deeper understanding of the human process of change and creates the opportunity for them to discover, and understand, the human experience that is at the heart of their athlete stories. In doing so, their programmes are proven to enhance the mental well-being and resilience of athletes as they navigate the difficult journey of transition.

About Reboot

In 2019 a group of former professional athletes recognised the need to provide positive interventions to help athletes better manage their overall health and preparation for life after sport. They sought out a team of personal growth practitioners and together developed Reboot, a peer-peer based mental health provision. Reboot is a sports-agnostic community that prepares transitioning and retired athletes for life after sports. They empower athletes with the practical skills, confidence, and network they need to thrive in their next chapter. Reboot specialises in helping athletes get comfortable with their new identity, focusing on emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

About The True Athlete Project

The True Athlete Project aims to build a more compassionate world through sport. They design and deliver a range of pioneering programmes at all levels of sport – those that prioritise personal growth and an increased awareness in all aspects of life. These programmes enhance each athlete’s experience of sport, improving their overall health and performance, and instilling in them a passion for making a positive difference in the world. Their approach to athlete development is to fully integrate wellbeing, personal growth and social impact so that these are simply part and parcel of what it means to be an athlete. The True Athlete Project promotes a holistic, mindfulness-based approach to personal development and wellbeing as an athlete.
